We have so much to talk about. We have new ideas around climate, cars, and the future of money. We’re opening up regarding gender, misogyny, colonization, and trauma. Some conversations are pure fun. They’re about what we eat and drink or play. Others are more difficult.
They all need to take place. LitFest makes sure they can.
LitFest is a festival where writers share true stories. Every October, we invite authors to the stage to tell what they know and challenge us with their ideas.
It’s Canada’s first and only nonfiction festival.
LitFest started small. In 2002, a few thought leaders formed the Alberta Book Fair Society and held a book fair. In 2006, that fair became a three-day non-fiction festival.
Since then, LitFest has grown. Throughout downtown (and occasionally Old Strathcona) stages feature authors and their thought-provoking books. Panels, readings, performances, and workshops start conversations.
LitFest connects people and ideas. Throughout the year, we scout authors and host writers who keep the city reading and talking about what matters most.
Treaty 6
LitFest respectfully acknowledges and is grateful to gather on Treaty 6 territory, which is valued as a meeting place and home to many Indigenous nations, including the Cree, Nakota-Sioux, Tsuu-T’ina, Blackfoot, and Métis as well as many others. We extend our hand in respect and friendship to these nations and strive to honour the tradition of sharing stories from many voices on this land.
Diversity Statement
Litfest is committed to championing policies, practices and applications of cultural equity that empower a just, inclusive and equitable organization. Litfest recognizes that many existing systems of power grant privilege and access unequally, equity is crucial to the sustainability of Edmonton’s Arts and Cultural sector. Litfest is working in and creating pathways to ensure that opportunities to participate and contribute to the festival are grounded in processes that build inclusive spaces for expression and artistic creations for everyone to enjoy.
