Daniela Carbajal is of mixed Indigenous Nahua (paternal) and unknown settler (maternal) descent. Her paternal grandfather is Nahua and her grandmother is of mixed descent, like she is. Her grandfather’s lineage is of Xicotencatl, a name his Nahua mother bore, his father from the coast of Otomi territory. This lineage is from Atlixco, Puebla, Mexico. Raised by her paternal family, Daniela has always carried her identity close to her heart. Her work is dedicated to her paternal grandparents, who have deeply shaped who she is and how she engages with this world. She now calls Edmonton her home alongside her partner, Isaiah Monias, and daughter Rosalyn, both members of Heart Lake First Nation. This fall she will begin her Master of Arts in Native Studies, where she will focus on the practice and act of being in kinship with Elders. She enjoys bringing art and creativity into all areas of her life.
